D.C. United won 7-1 against Toronto FC in their 12th match of the 2021 Major League Soccer Regular Season.
The Black-and-Red won their second straight match at home thanks to a historic goalscoring output featuring seven different goal scorers for United. They improve to 5-6-1 with 16 points accumulated in 2021.The Black-and-Red started with Bill Hamid in net and Donovan Pines, Brendan Hines-Ike, and Andy Najar starting in the back three with Kevin Paredes and Julian Gressel as the two wingbacks. Júnior Moreno and Russell Canouse started in the midfield and Adrien Perez, Paul Arriola, and Nigel Robertha started up top for the front three for the Black-and-Red.
D.C. United took over the match from the start, scoring three goals in the first 21 minutes. The first goal was scored in the second minute by Kevin Paredes when he finished into the roof of the net at the back post after getting on the end of a low cross played in by Andy Najar. The goal was the first of the Homegrown Midfielder’s D.C. United career.
The second goal was scored in the eighth minute when a Moreno through ball put Nigel Robertha clean through on a breakaway that Robertha finished into the bottom right corner.
United scored their third goal in the 21st minute when a Russell Canouse shot from inside the box took a deflection off a Toronto defender and rolled into the net, resulting in an own goal. Toronto FC added a goal of their own in the 39th minute and D.C. United went into halftime leading 3-1.
United continued to add to their goal total despite their two-goal lead. In the 71st minute, Paul Arriola received a pass from Najar in the box, and after beating a defender with a touch to right finished in the bottom left corner around the goalkeeper.
The Black-and-Red got their fifth goal ten minutes later when Ola Kamara got on the end of a long pass by Griffin Yow and finished nicely with his left foot into the bottom left corner.
Their sixth goal came in the 85th minute when Yamil Asad scored a header at the back post off a cross from the left wing by Arriola.
The seventh and final goal was scored by Griffin Yow when he made a run from the corner and finished with his left foot at the near post.
The seven goals scored were the most in D.C. United single-match history and was only the tenth time in the history of Major League Soccer that seven or more goals were scored in a game.
